Expressway will be constructed from Gorakhpur to Siliguri in West Bengal. The Central Government has given in-principle consent for the construction of this expressway. This expressway will start from Gorakhpur and enter Gopalganj in Bihar. After this it will go to Siliguri via Siwan, Chhapra, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Saharsa, Purnia, Kishanganj.
The entire part of this expressway will be greenfield. There is no plan to include any old road in the expressway. This expressway will also have connectivity with other roads including Gorakhpur-Azamgarh Link Expressway in UP. In this way, it will be easy to travel from Siliguri to major cities of UP as well as Delhi.
There is no straight road yet
The road construction department has started the process of realizing this road. At present there is no direct road between Gorakhpur to Siliguri. Because of this it takes a long time to cover the distance from Gorakhpur to Siliguri. Whereas the proposed Gorakhpur-Siliguri Expressway will reduce the distance between the two cities to less than 600 kms. This will not only make traffic easier, but will also open new avenues of business. Out of this six-eight-lane expressway, 416 km will pass through Bihar. That is, Bihar will benefit more from its construction.
Most expressways in Uttar Pradesh
About 1800 km of expressways have been constructed in the country so far. The maximum of these is 930 km expressway in Uttar Pradesh. At present, the work of construction of about one thousand kilometers more expressways is going on in UP. Whereas in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab etc., construction of more than seven thousand km of expressways is going on.
Bihar’s fourth expressway will be
This proposed road between Gorakhpur to Siliguri will be the fourth expressway of Bihar. The process of construction of expressway between Aurangabad to Jaynagar is going on. The land acquisition work has been done for this road and soon its tender will be issued. On the other hand, the second expressway will be from Raxaul to Kolkata via Patna. A proposal for the construction of this expressway has been sent to the Center under Bharatmala-II. Third expressway is proposed between Buxar to Bhagalpur. Now the exercise of construction of third expressway between Gorakhpur to Siliguri has started. This expressway will also have connectivity with other roads including Gorakhpur-Azamgarh Link Expressway in UP. In this way it will be easy to travel from Siliguri to major cities of UP as well as Delhi.
Road Construction Department Minister Nitin Naveen said that Bihar would benefit the most from the construction of Gorakhpur to Siliguri Expressway. Especially for North Bihar, this road will prove to be a boon. This will make the journey of the people easier and new avenues of development will open up.
