Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Wednesday that India has the potential to top the air travel sector in almost a decade. He underlined the commitment of the central government to take the aviation sector to new heights.

He said that the government is committed to improve ‘connectivity’ on regional and long-distance international routes. Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the government has set a target to increase the number of airports from the existing 136 to 220 by 2025.

Government’s focus in the air flight sector

According to Scindia, 74 airports were built in 70 years. While 62 more airports have been built in the last seven years. Now there are some 136 airports in the country. He said that by expanding this sector, the government has prepared a roadmap.

The central government aims to reach a total of 220 airports by the year 2025 and this includes heliports and water ports. He said, ‘There are many tasks in front of us, which have to be completed. Tomorrow we are going to launch Jewar airport (near Noida).

He said that a new market has opened up for connectivity and travel, growth in the civil aviation sector will now be driven by tier II and III cities. Tier I cities have reached their maturity. The Union Minister said that most of the metros need another airport.
